Launching SonDeBaril with new show “Evolución” on September 16 & 17!
SonDeBaril arose out of the elements that drew me and Singer/Percussionist Yiyi Orozco together: the rhythms, sound, and movement of the age-old yet constantly evolving art form of flamenco.
During this pivotal time, we found ourselves exploring new realities that inspired fresh ideas. We’re so excited to bring our vision to life and share it with you!
Yiyi and I created “Evolución” with support from the Maryland State Arts Council in collaboration with guitarist Ricardo Marlow, dancers Edwin Aparicio and Anna Menendez, who will also be performing with us.

In the Studio
When you’re alone in the studio and you ask,
“… upward or downward movement?”
Good ol’ trusty video will tell you ☺️

European Music Day / La Fête de la Musique Européen on June 21 with Arte Flamenco
Celebrating music at the Sylvan Theater. Such a memorable day! Thanks to our friends at the French Embassy for putting together an amazing summer solstice experience - the Washington Monument right there in front of us, a great crowd and the sun setting… A magical day!
Sharing some video clips!
Tech moment with Arte Flamenco
…aaaand we’re back in the theater! It was good to get my pulse racing after the hiatus 😅

A semi-emergence!
Retrospective: Pandemic Days
About to dance in a room with humans! Excited. A LIVE show! 🌀❤️✨
Dance, dance, dance…
Retrospective: Pandemic Days
April 2021 in the studio… dancing for a fundraiser in collaboration with other artists in DC organized by the Washington Performing Arts. We were asked to record our parts --like everything in those days!
“New Normal” - recording school shows, dinner in freezing temps…
Retrospective: Pandemic Days
A look back to that time when dinner was out in the cold right after recording some pieces because Covid winter. The heaters plus coats kept us nice and toasty, the food and drink yummy, and so much to catch up on with the extended fam - just what we needed!

A Journey of 25 Years
Retrospective: Pandemic Days
When Rina asked me if I would dance to our batch’s song - the song we sang at our graduation 25 years ago, my first thought was oh my, they are serious. Because it had been a running joke that we would dance flamenco at our Velada 🤣 For those who are not familiar with flamenco, the music and dance is steeped in centuries of tradition, an amalgamation of influences that the gypsies brought to Andalucia, the belly of flamenco. It sounds very different from our batch’s song ☺️
Well, I listened to the song and the dance came. So here it is, sharing it with you, 25 years older than when we first sang “Our Dowry”, beautifully written by Rina Marquez.

Silver Linings
Retrospective: Pandemic Days
We never know where our paths lead to... here we are dancing to the same song we sang at our high school graduation 25 years ago, the same sun shining on us 💛 Cheri in Moscow dancing ballet, me here in DC dancing flamenco. The last time I saw Cheri was when I visited her in Florence right after college... we were 21 years old!

August days
Welcome to my blog.
As August ends, I thought I would do a retrospective of the past year starting with this first post. It’s a way of remembering this time of big change all over our planet.
